Mauritania President Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz has been elected new chairman of the African Union (AU).
Also elected was Nigeria as third vice president coming behind Zimbabwe and Democratic Republic of Congo as first and second vice presidents respectively.
The election took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the ongoing 22nd Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
The result of the election was announced yesterday in Addis Ababa at the commencement of the AU summit.
The newly elected AU chairman takes over from Ethiopia Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn.
In his acceptance speech, Abdelaziz pledged to promote and uphold the objectives of the continental body.
He said: “I am deeply honoured to be the chairperson of AU. This, for me, is a mark of confidence which I truly appreciate”.
