NUGA: UNIPORT Sweeps 10 gold, 9 Silvers in Swimming


University of Port-Harcourt won no fewer than 10 gold medals and 9 silvers in the swimming pool competition held at the ongoing 24th edition of the Nigeria Universities Games.
The team got the gold during a keenly contested swimming competition in backstroke and individual medley.
Though no official result has been released, the female athletes of the school have got five gold and five silvers; the male athletes won four silvers, five gold in both 100 and 200 metres.
Our correspondent learnmt that the winners of the 200 metres swimming are twins. They are Gbagbe Fiezigbe and Doutimi, who are 22-year-old.
One of them, Fiezigbe said they are joyful for emerging top in the competition. She said, “I am happy we won. We are going to win almost the gold in swimming because it is our strength.”
An aquatic technician and referee of the swimming competition, Patrick Egbele commended the performance of the athletes saying, “The swimming pool is standard, and it is one of the best in Nigeria at present. The athletes match the standard and they are doing fine. Although some of them are not competitive swimmers but they have really done well. It is a four-day swimming event and I expect the best to emerge.”
