Three gunmen on a motorcycle stormed Ondo Road, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on Monday and waylaid a graduate, hacking him to death.
Our correspondent learnt that the deceased, Femi Adebanjo, was abandoned by the roadside in a pool of blood after the incident.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the three gunmen trailed Adebanjo, aka Efrebor, who was also on a motorcycle, to Fatina Junction where they attacked him at about 6pm.
Adebanjo is said to have finished from the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu Ode, a few years ago.
It was said that his assailants first rained bullets on the victim before they attacked him with machetes.
A source said the assailants thereafter escaped on the motorcycle, while a crowd of sympathisers later called the police attention to the incident.
It was gathered that policemen from the Igbeba division later arrived in the area to remove Adebanjo’s corpse. The body was reportedly deposited in a morgue.
A resident, who gave his name only as Sulaimon, told PUNCH Metro that before the people could rush the victim to a nearby hospital, he had died.
He said, “It was at about 6pm at the Fatina Junction. The men waylaid a motorcycle, which was conveying Adebanjo, and rained bullets on him. They later dragged him to a corner and began to cut him with machetes.
“No one could move near them until they were through and left the scene on their motorcycle. It was a very terrible scene. Some people later called the police to report the matter. The officers came to remove the corpse in their van.”
Our correspondent gathered that Adebanjo, who hailed from Ijebu Isiwo.
A police source told PUNCH Metro that preliminary investigation showed that the attack was cult-related.
“They trailed him to that location. They did not attack anyone else at that junction. It is assumed that the assailants had some sort of relationship with him,” he added.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident.
He added that investigations were ongoing to apprehend the killers, while the police had released the body to the family for burial.
He said, “The parents have requested the boy’s corpse and the police have released it to the father.
“Meanwhile, investigation is on to arrest the killers.
“The police are also mindful of the fact that Alagemo festival is ongoing in Ijebu Ode.
“However, security is being strengthened to prevent cult-related attacks.
