In a break with recent tradition, Samsung Electronics Co. will move up the autumn launch of its oversize smartphone lineup by several weeks to mid-August, according to a person familiar with the matter. The South Korean company’s move is part of a bid to give its Galaxy Note smartphone-tablet hybrids some breathing room before mid-September, when Apple Inc. typically unveils its refreshed iPhone—a product whose popularity has the potential to monopolize media and consumer attention for weeks. Since the release of the first Galaxy Note at the IFA Berlin conference in September 2011, Samsung has leveraged the annual trade show to showcase its latest Note model. The device was a hit, and helped Samsung pioneer a new category: the oversize smartphone sometimes called the “phablet,” a portmanteau of phone and tablet. Together with the release of its flagship smartphone each February, Samsung built up a rhythm that suppliers, distributors and consumers could set their watch to: the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note would launch in February and September, respectively. But Apple stole Samsung’s thunder last September with the launch of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, its biggest phone yet. Not only did the iPhone 6 Plus’s 5.5-inch screen rival the Galaxy Note 4’s 5.7-inch screen, the new iPhones were unveiled six days after the Galaxy Note 4 was introduced on September 3. The Galaxy Note 4 went on sale just weeks after the new iPhones. Samsung’s move to mid-August would help it avoid that same fate this year, according to the person, who said the launch event is being planned for a major U.S. city that hasn’t yet been decided. Moving the date forward would also give Samsung a chance to inject some life into its mobile operations after a second quarter that was likely weak because of poor Galaxy S6 sales.
