Suspect tells court how she was lured into prostitution by a Facebook friend

Drama ensued at a Magistrates’ Court sitting in Wuse, Abuja recently when a 19-year-old girl informed the court that she was lured into prostitution by a Facebook friend.
The girl, of no fixed address was earlier arraigned before the court for stealing six hand bags, three cell phones and N40,000.
The suspect who pleaded guilty to the allegations further told the court that she committed the offence because she was trying to gather money to go back to her state to register for Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination.
“I never knew it would come to this. I wanted to register for WAEC but I didn’t have money so a friend of mine whom I met on Facebook invited me to Abuja who eventually lured me into prostitution,” She said.
She however pleaded with the court to be lenient in its judgement.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Grace Adebayo, in her verdict sentenced her to three months imprisonment, having pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of theft.
The magistrate however gave her an option to pay N40,000 as fine and advised her to change her ways.
She also ordered that the recovered items be returned to the owner.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Cpl. Umaru Ango, had told the court that on March 24, at about 9:30am, two complainants, both of Masallachi Road, beside Redeem Church, Jabi, Abuja, lodged a report against her at the Wuse Police Station.
