I traveled to the east on Saturday and returned on Sunday. On my way back, just about 5 km to Lokoja (coming from Okene), I was actually doing about between 120km/h and 140km/h (can’t be too sure of the exact speed) when all of a sudden, a trailer swerved onto my lane (it was a two way traffic on a single lane) and started overtaking another vehicle.
I stepped on the brakes as hard as I could, but judging from the distance, I had no option than to leave the road, else it will be a head on collision. The edge of the road was very rough and as I cleared of the road, two of my tires (right front and rear) blew out. My car skidded a little bit and finally came to a stop. I was very surprised when I got out of my car (2007 Honda Accord) and observed it was just the two tires that went bad.
The two cars following behind me were not as lucky, one of them had the front wheel pulled out completely. I had to drive on my rims to Lokoja where I used ATM to make withdrawals and bought two new tires before continuing my journey.
I totally blamed the incident on the trailer driver who did not even stop, he just continued driving. When I narrated this story to a friend, he said I was wrong for doing above the highway limit of 100km/h, could this have saved my tires?
