POLICE TO POST SNIFFER DOGS TO AIRPORTS, SEAPORTS

The police authorities have concluded arrangements to post sniffer dogs to airports and seaports across the country.
Commissioner of Police in charge of the Anti-Bomb Command,  Abdulmajid Ali, who disclosed this said the development will help checkmate, not only the illegal importation of fire arms by criminally minded individuals, but will be able to detect trafficking of illicit drugs.
“Sniffer dogs are a lot more efficient in the detection of prohibited items than scanners, which are fixed and dependent on so many factors; such as electricity. The scanners can also develop fault during operations. Sniffer dogs can achieve a lot of mileage than scanners, which are stationary,” he added.
He added that operatives of the command recovered assorted weapons such as Improvised Explosive Device (IED) grenades, dynamites and rocket launchers from some hideouts.
“These weapons were recovered, disarmed and demolished while others were evacuated from many parts of the federation. Some of those areas include Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Rivers, Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Gombe, Bauchi, Plateau, Kwara and Akwa Ibom States. These weapons would have caused innumerable deaths and colossal damage to property, had it been they were not recovered,” he said.
The commissioner of police further stated that operatives of the command discovered and dismantled a bomb factory located at Tudun Salamanu Fadama Mada area of Bauchi metropolis on February 19, 2013.
He said items recovered during the operation include 18 cylinders of varying sizes, 14 Turkey oil cans, 10 hand boosters, also known as hand grenades, half bag of ammonium nitrate, remote control device and one bag of empty Bobo drink containers
